The third- party study, “The Efficacy of Self-Disinfecting Bedrail Covers in an Intensive Care Unit” was conducted on the ActivSurface™ Covers and the study was published in the April 2018, Volume 46, Issue 4 of the American Journal of Infection Control (AJIC).
The goal of the study was to investigate the antibacterial effectiveness of the ActivSurface™ Covers in a critical care environment, and the study was conducted in the medical-surgical intensive care unit (ICU) of Geisinger Medical Center, a 550-bed tertiary care academic hospital with 42 adult ICU beds.
Researchers observed a consistent 82.5% decrease of colony forming bacteria on the bedrails using the AIONX® ActivSurface™ Covers. The researchers also noticed a reduction of notable pathogens including: Streptococcus pneumoniae, which causes pneumococcal infections; Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium, which are the leading causes of surgical wound infection and urinary tract infection; Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis, recognized as important causes of healthcare-associated infections; and Pseudomonas spp.
